Kirk's Idea Of Diplomacy: "It's Time To Take Out The Trash" In Gaza

While Israel’s recent incursion into Gaza is a thorny issue and one beyond our purview here at Progress Illinois, I think there's one thing we can all agree on: in times of crisis, when bombs are flying abroad and innocent civilians are being killed and maimed, diplomacy is more important than ever. That’s what makes this quote from GOP Rep. Mark Kirk last week at a pro-Israel rally in D.C. so upsetting:

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Reps. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Frank Wolf (R-Va.) all also strongly backed the Jewish state’s actions at the hourlong rally.

“To misquote Shakespeare, something is rotten in Gaza and now it’s time to take out the trash,” Kirk said.

Ellen of the Tenth, who tipped us off to the quote, has the right take:

One of the reasons we elected Barack Obama president was to rehabilitate our reputation in the world. I don’t think Mark Kirk is the guy we can rely upon to help do that. We cannot hold him up as a world leader when he shows no regard whatsoever for the people of the world.

American politicians surpass any other nation's in spewing uninformed opinions rather than facts. rather than try to find a solution, or read anything that would give them a greater understanding of political science or geopolitics, history of the region etc., they turn to rhetoric from the uninformed to get re-elected. Thank God world power is shifting.

They maybe interested to know many Isrealis and jews all over the world do not want this slaughter to continue.

Rep. Kirk does the citizens of Illinois a great disservice by his appalling remark likening human beings to "trash." It is not an attitude that the people I know share; rather they are appalled by the horrific, disproportionate price that Gazans are paying in this nihilistic war, and it is precisely the failure of each side to recognize the just claims of the other and to treat them with the dignity that all human beings are entitled to that has resulted in the continuing impasse and carnage. I'm not interested in anything an American politician has to say about this situation that is not informed, honest and even-handed. I'm sick of counter-productive propaganda and one-sided views.

This guy sounds like his second job is as an Al Qaeda recruiter. Remarks like these are recruiting gold for radicals. Calling human beings trash in the hallowed halls of a legislative building reminds people of an era they sacrificed everything to overcome. An era where millions of people were considered trash and incinerated. That comment is not befitting of an elected federal representative.

People complain of the statements of the Iranian leadership on Israel - is this any better?

Mark Kirk's repulsive remark equating "trash" to the dead & maimed bodies of innocent parents and children is discouraging. How can our leaders be so out of touch....those types of bigoted ugly words are what caused the hatred toward america that lead to the world trade tower attacks. Shame on Kirk! The USA has no one to blame but ourselves for our diminished international standing. WE need to elect new responsible representation that is not blinded by lobby influences. How does a man like Kirk sleep at night? Does he think he is so much better than homeless palestinians and their families?.....their deaths (frequently paid for by us tax dollars) do not bother him at all?

What is wrong with Illinois? Seems like they have the worst of the worst when it comes to any kind of elected official. Obviously many of the politicians there are very misinformed about what is expected of them and about who pays their salary. When will there be someone that wants to stop all war in the world? Guess not as long as there is religion and weapons manufacturers.
Kirk go home and educate yourself.

Why doesn't the stupid SOB volunteer for the israeli military?

All Hamas has to do ... ALL THEY HAVE TO DO ... is to stop the rockets. If there are dead civilians in the streets, the innocent blood is in their hands, they who cynically embed their arsenals and rocket launchers in dense concentrations of innocents. What would you call creatures who willingly do that to their own people -- those who elected them to power -- if not the scum of the earth?

How tacky, Mark Kirk...

More than 200 children are dead. 800 people. 4000 wounded. Two UN shelters have been bombed. The majority of the population is unarmed and just trying to survive. We need a ceasefire and a new policy towards Israel and Palestine. This Bush policy has failed badly.

In response to the yahoo above "elagins" according to your justification, someone should bomb us for electing Bush... (all he needed to do was stop dropping bombs on people)

In response to Mark Kirk-- let's get rid of these biggots from our elected offices.

YES WE CAN

Unfortunately most people do not know or care to educate themselves about what is going on in Palestine. The Israelis illegally occupy the land and control the land, the water and the people living there. They were given 78% of Palestine and now they want the rest. They want the land but not the people. This is not about rockets. This is about genocide. These attacks have been planned for along time. The Israelis control everyday life and make it impossible for the Palestinians to make a living. Check points everywhere. The Israeli roads are good. Palestinians are not allowed to use those roads. Check points make it impossible for farmers to get to their land. If they are not allowed access to their land after a certain amount of time of disuse the land is turned over to the Israeli government. Rockets would stop if Israel would withdraw from Palestine and let these people live their own lives. How many of us would want someone else occupying our land and controlling everything we did?

Its time to let Israel - a sovereign nation - do what it needs to do in order to prevent the bombings of schools, discos, bus stops, and pizzerias. Jews/Israelis are not the only ones injured by these unnecessary attacks and, unfortunately, more than one American has been killed by these militants. The world has said virtually nothing after the aforementioned attacks as well as the last 3 years of double-digit rocket attacks and all of a sudden, when Israel wants to defend herself, we now have a 'crisis.'

I am no supporter of Mr. Kirk - and for full disclosure - do not live in his district. I do not think he was implying that the US should be involved, though the UN has failed to enforce at least one security council resolution as evidenced by last week's attack from Lebanon.

When Bush essentially stated, two years ago, that Israel has a right to defend herself but better not, this did not help matters. Violence is violence, terrorism is terrorism whether between the Atlantic and Pacific or in the Middle East.

No more double standards and no more hate crimes against houses of worship.
