He didn’t commit fully, but the writing is on the wall. In an interview with the State Journal-Register
editorial board yesterday, State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias said he is
considering a 2010 gubernatorial run. “I’ve been thinking about it,” he
told the paper. “You see what’s been going on in Springfield, and you
see a lack of leadership.”
No doubt inspired by the election of friend and colleague Barack Obama, Giannoulias thinks Illinois voters are ready for some fresh ideas in Springfield. That’s a trait he certainly offers. If elected, it appears the 32-year old treasurer would be the youngest governor in state history, taking the title from Republican John Marshall Hamilton, who was 36 when he assumed the position in 1883.
In other election speculation news, the Sun-Times Lynn Sweet is reporting that Justin Oberman, an aviation security specialist and Lincoln Park businessman, filed papers to create an exploratory committee for the vacant 5th District House seat. The congressional hopeful was a member of Obama’s advisory committee on homeland security during the campaign.
