House Defeats Bailout Bill Proposal

About an hour ago, the House voted down the $700 billion bailout proposal cobbled together over the past week.  The final tally was 205-228.  As predicted, there was a good amount of crossover, with 95 Democrats voting against and 65 Republicans voting for.  We're trying to get some responses from various members of the Illinois congressional delegation.  In the meantime, here's how the delegation voted (Republicans in italics):

AYES
Bean, Davis, Emanuel, Foster, Gutierrez, Hare, Kirk, Lahood, Schakowsky

NAYS
Biggert, Costello, Jackson, Johnson, Lipinski, Manzullo, Roskam, Rush, Shimkus

Retiring GOP Rep. Jerry Weller was the only member of the House not to vote.

More to come ...

I, for one, am glad the bailout did not go through. There are a lot of ideas out there to solve this crisis. My favoritie can be found here: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/26

We were railroaded into the Iraq War with the same propaganda tactics (fear, limited time) and we should not be railroaded again.

There were 95 Dems who did NOT support the bill. I don't believe they had partisan politics in mind. I thank them for their ability to stand up to the tide.
