More News On McCain's Pro-Choice Pick
Politico reports that party officials have been contacted by John McCain's campaign in recent days and asked about the possible
fallout McCain would experience from adding a pro-choice pol to his
ticket. This signals he's strongly considering former Pennsylvania
Republican Gov. Tom Ridge and Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) as
potential running mates. Either pick could infuriate many
conservatives.
Obama: McCain Shouldn't Question My Patriotism
In a speech before the Veterans of Foreign Wars yesterday morning, Barack Obama confronted McCain's attacks on his patriotism,
including the Republican's claim that Obama would rather lose a war
than lose an election. "I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks
his positions on national security based on politics or personal
ambition," Obama said. "I have not suggested it because I believe that
he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now it's time
for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same."
Rep. Lipinski Backs CN Takeover Of EJ&E
After taking heat from a number of high-profile
politicians, Canadian National Railway has found a new ally for its
purchase of the EJ&E railroad in Rep. Dan Lipinski (D), who
came out in favor of the merger yesterday. Despite environmental
concerns, Lipinski noted that the merger could benefit suburbs that
would see a reduction in train traffic with fewer blocked crossings,
idling trains and whistles. Lipinski serves on the influential House
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Gov. Blagojevich Snubbed At DNC
Illinois' unpopular governor will have to watch the proceedings from
the peanut gallery next week while three of his biggest potential challengers for re-election strut their stuff in front of a national
audience. That's the word coming out of the Democratic National
Committee, who have tapped Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, Comptroller Dan Hynes, and Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan
to speak during the opening night of the Democratic National
Convention. Mayor Richard Daley will speak on Wednesday night as well
Federal Hiring Monitor Eyes City Layoffs
Concerned about the expected layoffs of 1,000 city employees,
federal hiring monitor Noelle Brennan is negotiating with the city to
implement procedures to ensure that the firings won't be
politically motivated. Mayor Daley scoffed at the insinuation,
saying that residents don't care about bureaucrats but just want "their
trash picked up, their trees trimmed, their buildings built."
Health Care Expansion For Young Adults Passes
Under a legislation revised by Gov. Rod Blagojevich
during the recent special session and approved Tuesday by the Illinois Senate, young adults could stay on
their parents' health insurance plan until they turn 26. There are an
estimated 300,000 twentysomethings who are eligible. However, business groups may sue to stop the expansion.
